Prior to my sophomore debut at Western Illinois University, I experienced a moment of enlightenment on a beautiful evening during the summer of 2015.

The experience occurred during my visit in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as I was “ear-hustling” my uncle Richie indulge in conversation regarding religion and Jesus Christ.

The premise of the discussions was about the signs of the end times prophesied in the book of Revelations in the Holy Bible. The point that raised my curiosity the most was the mention of the spiritual gift of discernment.  

After analyzing my uncle’s conversation about spiritual discernment, I asked myself “what is spiritual discernment?”  Building a more intimate relationship with God and conducting further research aided me in finding the true meaning of what would awaken as my spiritual gift.

What Is Spiritual Discernment?

 

Spiritual discernment is also known as the gift of discernment of spirits or the ability to distinguish between spirits. Individuals blessed with the gift of spiritual discernment are blessed with a heightened sense of awareness, allowing them to distinguish, appraise, or judge a person, situation, or environment.

 For the majority of my life, I was uncertain as to whether or not I was blessed with this spiritual gift. I would experience strong sensations pertaining to people and situations, but I would often belittle the feelings with the excuse of “hallucinating” or “tweaking.” 

However, one night I came to the realization that I was not hallucinating and that I was, in fact, receiving spiritual enlightenment from the Lord. One night I had a dream, the deepest dream of my life, and my whole life changed.

How To Identify Spiritual Discernment

As my junior year at Western Illinois University progressed, so did my number of mental lapses. I was making mistake after mistake consecutively whether it be indulging in the wrong group of people or simply just making irrational decisions out of desperation. This unhealthy cycle worsened until the Lord decided that I climaxed and needed a reality check. 

On the night of November 18, 2016, the Lord gave me a vision. The dream was based on my school located in Macomb, Illinois. In the dream, I was riding the campus bus to my home off-campus when suddenly I noticed a masked man with a black hoodie directing his firearm at his target, me. 

The dream felt like it was my reality, inciting emotions of fear, despair, confusion, and helplessness.

Throughout the dream, I saw this figure at every bus stop and with him was his firearm directed towards me at all times. The part that struck me the most was that he never attempted to fire his weapon or speak to me.

 After about ten minutes of being stalked by the masked man, I awoke from my slumber with more feelings of confusion. The dream felt surreal, so bizarre that I woke up sweating. The following morning, I longed for an interpretation. Once I discovered the meaning of the dream, I knew for certain there was a God.

 

The Interpretation

 

I called my mother the next morning and asked for her interpretation just to be sure. After her confirmation, the enlightenment began. The “masked man” was me the entire time. That’s right, ME, Isaiah Herard. The school has been the foundation of my success, yet I am the foundation of my failures. 

The man aiming his firearm at me was a sign from God warning me that the person capable of inflicting the most pain on me is myself, not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

I was warned to use my talents for good and to heed to all of the warnings that he gives me through my gift of spiritual discernment. Once I received this message, I realized that I must separate myself from all negative people and situations or I would continue to make rash decisions and pull the trigger on my own life. 

    God gives Christians the gift of discernment to enable us to vividly recognize, distinguish, and react to the influences of God, Satan, the world, and the flesh in any given situation. As perilous times draw near and the spirits of good and evil reveal themselves, it is the duty of Christians to stay vigilant and use the spiritual gift of discernment to avoid the wickedness of the world.

    “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ.” –Philippians 1:9-10
