Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals was prefaced with intense suspense following the return of 2x finals MVP and 4x scoring champion Kevin Durant who was last seen in the second round of the playoffs against a James Harden led Houston Rockets team. 

During the first 12 minutes of his highly anticipated finals debut, Durant scored 11 points and brought down two rebounds in what was on pace to be an amazing comeback game for the Warriors’ all-star player.

 Unfortunately, a rupturing turn of events transpired as Durant called for textbook isolation on his former OKC teammate Serge Ibaka. As he performed his traditional right-to-left crossover, the slim reaper’s Achilles popped and ended his chances of finishing the 2019 NBA Finals. 

Although the injury heard around the world shocked the NBA, the Warriors remained steadfast and held on to win 106-105 after nailing 20 threes for the night (tied second-most for an NBA Finals game). The Warriors had a career night no doubt, but Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors were still on pace to seal the deal and bring the first-ever NBA Championship to Toronto, Canada.

After suffering from a relatively quiet night, Leonard erupted late in the fourth scoring 10 straight points to continue a Raptors 12-2 run that increased their lead to six points. At this point, the champagne bottles were being prepared as it appeared the Raptors would seal the deal.

Until Raptors Head Coach Nick Nurse called an unsolicited timeout with 3:05 remaining in the midst of a 12-2 run in favor of his Raptors team! 

 

 
 

After Nurse’s self-destructive timeout, Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors offense go aloof while Steph Curry and Klay Thompson drain a few go-ahead threes to move the Warriors up one with just enough time for the Raptors to make a last effort at making NBA history. 

Inevitably, Kawhi Leonard received the ball for the game-winning shot but veteran and 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala double-teamed Leonard, forcing him to pass the ball to Fred VanVleet who swung the ball to Kyle Lowry who seemingly gave his team no chance to win with his missed shot.

Many basketball fanatics argue Kawhi Leonard made the right basketball play. While their argument may be substantial as the hall of fame players like Michael Jordan or Hakeem Olajuwon were willing to pass up a last-second shot to win the game, Leonard should have emulated the cerebral version of Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant … both of which would have ended the game as follows.
