In today’s millennial age, often considered the technological era, enjoying life without cell phones, video games, computers, and other mediums that connect us to the social world and augmented reality. Conducting an interpersonal experiment, I refrained from using any new media for a 12-hour period and replaced it with traditional media such as the telephone, TV, radio, print newspapers and magazines.

For the first few hours, I suffered withdrawals and received jaw-dropping headaches because it requires a high level of discipline to abstain from using devices that I am accustomed to using on a daily basis.

Adjusting to life without new age media was a tough task, but it was not impossible. My first order of business was to pick up a copy of the Western Courier Student Newspaper on my way to my first class. Reading is essential for the soul, therefore, since I could not read digital news from my phone, I decided to replace it with boring print media.

After a while, I realized I miss my phone more than I anticipated. Everybody that knows me, knows that my phone is in my hand all day, every day. My phone is my computer, a primary communication device, and an alarm clock all-in-one. Without the universal element of my iPhone, I was forced to adapt and use more traditional forms of communication.

Although the telephone, radio, and print journalism have been eclipsed by digital media such as the iPhone, laptop, and smart TV, traditional media is not dead yet. Traditional media is the founding father of all things journalism related. Without the printing press, there would be no computers or MacBooks that we enjoy today.

At the conclusion of my 12-hour grace period, I learned more about myself and the importance of technology. Due to the absence of my iPhone, I had an extremely difficult time connecting with the outside world and remaining productive. It’s hard to imagine young people of the millennial era surviving in a traditional era lacking the advancement of technology.
